Recently, a customer called me about a strong, unpleasant smell coming from her basement entrance. She suspected it was a dead rat and requested an inspection to confirm.
Upon arrival, she mentioned that a similar issue had occurred before, where a dead rat was found inside the wall. After discussing the process and costs involved, I proceeded to carefully open sections of the wall to investigate the source of the odor.
During the inspection, I did not find any dead rats inside. However, I discovered that the wall in question was a separation wall between two townhouses. This meant that any smell could potentially be coming from the neighboring unit. Additionally, I noticed that the entrance to the townhouse was not properly sealed, creating an easy access point for rodents to enter.
I explained my findings to the customer and recommended sealing the entrance to prevent future rodent issues. Addressing these entry points is crucial in avoiding recurring problems and maintaining a safe, odor-free home environment. She did not want to sand it because it was the basement entrance. just wanted to cover holes.
